Day 58: Career Advice: Finding What You're Good At

Some people are just better at being photographed than others.
My sister, like most college students, is struggling with the only question more pressing to this generation than how many hashtags are acceptable on any given post: What do I want to do with my life?

This weekend, my dad (a man wisened on every earthly topic except perhaps hashtag etiquette) asked her, "Well, what do you like to do?"  To which she responded, "I don't know.  Shop.  Eat.  Sleep."

Which apparently did not impress my father, because after a second's contemplation he said, "Alright, well what are you good at?"

Now, whether my sister knows it or not, she's good at a lot of things.  She's a fortunately gifted baker (or unfortunately, depending on whose butt you're looking at), she has an impressive eye for fashion and design, and (most importantly) she just has this natural way with people that makes them feel at ease.  (Something that is truly envied by those among us whose high school friends often referred to her as a "robot.")

It was surprisingly easy coming up with things my sister is good at, but it got me thinking: can I do the same for myself?  This is the selfie generation after all; shouldn't I already have a list of my superior qualities in my back pocket (or, ya know, my iPhone)?

And it turns out, I can think of lots of things I'm good at.  I'm not trying to brag or anything but actually, it only took me thirty minutes to think of this list of eight things I'm really good at.  Great, I'd even say... and God knows, I'm good at saying things.  So to start out the list of things at which I rule...

1.  Saying things.  Vague perhaps, but on the other hand, I have a blog that revolves essentially around nothing... yet I say things every single day.  That kind of BS-ery isn't something you can learn.
2.  Making eggs.  Granted, that's all I can make but gosh darn if my future children won't get their protein.
3.  Grammar.  Not to brag, but I can pack a mean semicolon.
4.  Singing.  I'm also rather good at lying.
5.  List Making.  I think this is self-explanatory.
6.  ART optimization.  My friend recently told me about a stat guys use to gauge their performance when texting a girl: the Average Response Time (ART).  Apparently, the higher the better (because, you know, you're like really busy).  Without even realizing it, I have mastered the art of ART, and not just with people I'm trying to woo; sometimes, I don't text my mom back for three whole days.  Talk about natural ability.
7.  Cliffhangers.  You know, make the reader dying to know how it ends.

And number 8...
